Design

Sophie Ann Rooney holds a Design Technology G.S.C.E., a foundation that informs her concept-driven approach to theatre-making. For Rooney, design is not decorative, it is dramaturgical. She creates rooms that reveal people: immersive environments where space, texture, light, and architecture function as active narrative forces, stripping away illusion and placing human truth under close examination.

Across all theatres under her artistic leadership, every production has been production designed by Rooney, often using recycled materials and limited resources to transform constraint into aesthetic language. Her spaces position the audience as witness, sometimes jury, to lives unfolding in real time. She also designs original poster artwork, extending each production’s visual identity from its first image through to the final curtain.
